What Are Dividends?

April 10, 2020

I get so many messages and questions about investing for dividends. I guess that every time I write a dividend income report, it makes people interested! And dividend income is only one aspect of investing. However, if you are wanting to build a passive income stream – which you absolutely should be thinking about! – then perhaps dividend investing is for you.

The only thing I have in terms of investing is the regret I didn’t start sooner. I dithered about for over a year before starting to invest. Yes, it can seem scary and there is the risk that you’ll lose your money – the markets recently have sown that – but honestly, you can learn as you go. You can start off small, from just £25 a month and build from there. Get used to the systems and research as you go along. There are so many places to learn about investing.

Anyway, back to dividends!

As you know, I am a dividend investor. I invest in stocks and funds that pay dividends as I want that income stream. Hopefully. the dream is to pay our fixed expenses with our dividend income. Ideally, we would need around £1,000 a month on average for this. However, if we manage to be mortgage free than this number could potentially be less! I provide up-to-the-minute updates over on my Patreon so make sure you join me over there.

But, what are dividends?

I have recorded a YouTube video all about them; what they are, what to look out for and what different things about them mean. Come and have a watch!

How are the recent effects affecting your dividends? I noticed that many of the banks/insurers etc have scrapped their dividends at least for this year. I think it’s only due to the PR disaster that would be reported in the press, rather than the underlying financials. I’m not a dividend investor myself, I think that companies that pay them are too huge to innovate and eventually will be overtaken by others

I have had some companies cut their dividend for this year; I am just going to wait and see. You have an interesting perspective – Coca Cola pay a dividend and are a huge company, do you think that about them, for example?
