May 2018: A Month In Review

May 31, 2018

I’ll be totally honest, I’m glad May is over and done with. It started off with me having chicken pox for the first time and being quite poorly with it. It really took me out of it, and just as I was feeling better, both Frugal Toddler and Frugal Baby got it. Frugal Toddler thankfully only got a few spots and it didn’t really affect him. But Frugal Baby got a lot of spots and was very uncomfortable with it. Thankfully, they’re both finally getting over it and the spots are fading.

But, hopefully that’ll be it now? I feel like the whole month has been off kilter because of that, almost like I’ve constantly been on the wrong foot, desperately trying to catch up with myself. Add in some seriously disturbed night’s of sleep and it’s just been a bit…meh.

So yes, glad May is over!

My Financial aims for May were:

– Have 18 No Spend Days (NSDs)

– Overpay our mortgage by £85

– Put £600 into savings

I have struggled with NSDs for ages, as little spends have crept into our daily budget. Mostly things related to the kids! So, I haven’t met this aim again. Like I say, this month has been strange. I’m very glad it’s over and getting my focus back. I have managed a very poor 13 NSDs this month.

I changed my overpayment target for 2018, as it had been sitting on the back burner and not really thought of at all. But, as being mortgage free is definitely a part of our early retirement plans, it needs to be in focus somewhat. This month I have managed to overpay our mortgage by £91.96 which I’m really pleased about. Chipping away gradually 🙂

Finally, our savings target will be lower in the coming months whilst I’m on maternity pay. If we manage this consistently every month until I return to work, I shall be very proud of myself. However, we’ve sold some shares in another account that were locked away until recently, so we’ve put £2,043.43 into our ultimate dream fund this month. How amazing is that?! If only we could save this much every month. Nowhere near it normally.

My Personal Aims For May were:

– lose 4lbs

– keep up with my bullet journal

– Sell five things on ebay.

I’ve lost three pounds this month so I’m okay with that. Definitely back on it with focus and determination next month – I’m lower in weight now than when I fell pregnant with Frugal Baby, so that’s something. I will keep plodding along with this.

I have done some bullet journalling this month, though not every day as it takes up more time than I seem to have had. Again, something I want to refocus on during June as it is helpful for me keeping track of what is going on.

I’ve sold a couple of things on ebay this month; I have had more listed than that but they haven’t sold. I have delisted these so maybe they will do next time. All pennies to add to the pot though 🙂

Well done on losing 3lbs even whilst feeling ill and then looking after 2 ill boys! I usually end up eating more when I am feeling meh.

I tried bullet journalling for about a week or so but couldn’t get on with it. I am a list and target person so ticking off the list is an absolute must. I thought having pages for further ahead would work but they ended up too small and pointless.

I didn’t invest any money as much as I drooled over various bullet journals, I had an inkling it was going to be a tall order to take on board. Maybe try again in a couple of months.

Thank you! I think that bullet journalling can take up a lot of time if you let it, so mine is very, very simple 🙂 I like ticking things off a list too! Maybe you could have both?

I’m trying to get back into frugal living. It’s really hard. I need to get into a habit. I want to save a big a deposit for a house as possible.

Made sandwiches at home, however went into a shop & purchased crisps & a sandwich (I know don’t ask)

Not purchased any clothes in the sale however I’m spending on food everyday eg coffee lunch at work.

Went to the supermarket without a list spent too much.

Brought items to make food however not got round to it yet I’m trying……….honestly

It sounds like you’ve got a great plan in place, and you can totally do this! Take it one day at a time 🙂
