A Buyer’s Guide To Laminate Flooring

August 16, 2019

If you’ve been reading my blog recently – or not so recently – then you’ll know that we have recently had an extension done, which including making a big kitchen diner for our family 🙂 it’s finally finished and it is already becoming my favourite room in the house! It’s so spacious, clean and (sometimes) tidy.

But, we debated over what kind of flooring to have in the kitchen. With two young boys, the flooring had to be something that could withstand their presence; including throwing food on the floor and stomping around excitedly. Plus having toys regularly rolled along it plus the cats added in for good measure, the flooring in the new kitchen needed to be durable.

To be honest, when we first started looking, I didn’t have a clue what type of flooring we were going to choose. I love the look of slate but it’s so expensive and I didn’t want to worry about it getting chipped. You can get vinyl but it can tear easily if you’re not careful, so not ideal with two young boys. So, we settled on getting laminate flooring.

Firstly, there are so many different styles and colours you can get! In fact, I didn’t realise just how many, and that was another decision we had to agree on. You can so many different options, from wood effect, stone, slate, herringbone and marble. Plus then there’s the different colours as well – grey, whitewashed, white and black. In fact, we looked at so many that it began to get confusing. But, there is definitely an option for everyone 🙂

Secondly, although we didn’t do this ourselves, when the laminate flooring arrived it was so easy to fit. Now, our kitchen diner space is fairly large, so we needed to cover quite a big area. We also needed some for the newly created utility room and toilet that we have also had added in downstairs. But, with the laminate flooring, it was so easy to fit together! It just clicked into place, no glue or anything. Yes, the different lengths had to be cut to fit our room, but it honestly didn’t take the fitters any time at all. I was so surprised.

Thirdly, if this isn’t obvious, it is really easy to keep clean. As someone with two messy boys, especially when eating dinner (how can they make so much mess!?) just a quick hoover and wipe over and the floor is good as new. Even with pesky things like spaghetti bolognese, it is so easy to keep clean. We chose a lovely grey colour for our kitchen, but I’m sure it would be the same for any colour you choose for your laminate flooring.

Finally, the durability of the product. Whilst we were looking at the different laminate flooring, it was pointed out that we should look at the AC ratings of the flooring we were going for – this post here explains more – but again with a young family in mind, this was also important to consider! We want the floor to last for a long time, with minimum wear and tear if possible, so another thing to factor in to the cost of the laminate flooring we chose.

We’re so happy with the end result and I think that laminate flooring was the best option to choose for our new kitchen. Well, I’m hoping so anyway! I guess only time will tell, but it seems to be good so far 🙂

Do you have laminate flooring in your house? Do you think it was a good choice?
