This One Simple Trick Will Save You Over £100 A Month!

June 15, 2016

I have written extensively about saving money on the Frugal Cottage and, as you’ve probably guessed, saving money is such an important part of our journey to early retirement, as it will provide the funds needed so we can achieve our goal. Some of my popular money saving posts are:

  3. Why I’m Aiming To Save 50% Of Our Income

There are so many ways to save money! But, after mentioning this tip in another post on here, plus talking to some people about it in real life, I thought it deserved it’s own post about how simple it really is to add over £100 to your savings each and every month. Once you regularly get into the habit of doing this, it will become second nature and part of your (hopefully) everyday routine.

I am, of course, talking about the account tidy!

At the end of each day, I check our online banking. I check to see nothing unusual has gone out of our joint account, which everyone should be doing on a regular basis, and then I do an account tidy, each and every day. All I do is round down our current account to the nearest £10. So, if the amount left was £217.98 I’d transfer over the £7.98 so then only £210 was left. So simple!

Here is an example of a month where you do an account tidy each day, just look at what it adds up to! These are made up amounts, but similar to the amounts I transfer each day.

Without really doing anything extra, you can add over £100 to your savings account, every month! This example here adds over £130 to the total over the month, just by transferring the random amount from your current account. It really is that simple.

What I tend to do is transfer it to an online savings account I have with the same provider as our current account, until that amount reaches £100, then I transfer it to my stocks and shares ISA , which I hold with Hargreaves Lansdown. It is totally up to you how you do it, but I suggest starting as soon as you read this!

So, a really easy way to make sure you bump up your savings! Do you do the account tidy?
